TWO HOTHEADS, WHERE ACTIVISM HAPPENS- Probe Magazine feature
By Kimberly Ellis
If the legalization of Cannabis is important to you, you've probably already heard of the smoking hot on-air duo of Mike Cann and Heather Mack. These Two Hotheads are directly affecting change in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. They are determined to empower their audience, to get involved with activism in general, especially with actions that they can take part in within their own backyard, and local community. They help find real solutions. The team of Cann and Mack are likely to ask one of their many on-air guests, "How can people get involved to help you with this cause?" What can you do to help as a citizen? "In my experience, it's been much easier to effect change at the city, local community, and state level, rather than nationally. I've had discussions with Senators, Governor, State Reps and local politicians that have moved the ball. That's the idea of how we like to do activism. Forget waiting for the President and Congress to fix it, what can we do local?" Cann says. When asked if he was excited about this particular moment in time, Cann said, "Yes! We're getting closer every day. Some states are going to legalize it, and Massachusetts might be one of the first in 2016." "We decriminalized in MA, medical is next, then legal in 2016. Not waiting for the President and Congress, or even the MA State House to do that, by ballot initiative. That was a great backdoor way. That's what I always look for. What can actually bring changes?"

Heather Mack, who spent four years working with the UMASS Cannabis Reform Coalition and eventually became president, talks about her roll on the show. "I think I bring a unique energy—I have a lot of enthusiasm and I get really into each interview. I try to connect with people and make them feel like they can tell me things they wouldn't tell other more mainstream media sources. Plus I feel I connect well with students and young folks who are just getting into activism, and I can draw on a lot of my experiences with organizing and leading a student drug reform group to give good advice." she went on to say, "We really value our listeners contributions and welcome any suggestions they have for topics they want to be covered. As far as other areas, I’m interested in talking about education, social services and outreach for minorities and other marginalized communities, LGBTQ activism, and women’s health issues. But again, pretty much nothing is off limits on our show, as long as it relates to activism—to something you can get off the couch, off the computer, and do something about."

Both hosts will be at this years 23rd Annual Boston Freedom Rally again. I asked Heather Mack what her plans were for the Rally and would her rap duo Solo Sexx be performing this year and this is what she had to say, "We sure are! I’m so unbelievably grateful to be able to say that Solo Sexx will be returning this year on the second stage. Last year was an incredible time and we are definitely looking forward to sharing the stage with so many other amazing speakers and performers." Mack frequently freestyles on the show with or about guests. "I also have been a performer for many years and love whenever I get a chance to rap or sing on the show! I always have a blast in the studio and I feel very lucky to be able to run my mouth on a microphone every Saturday afternoon." Mike Cann will be speaking at the Rally this year as well, with Congressman Barney Frank, and Judge Jim Gray as well as many other supporters of marijuana reform.
If you would like to listen to Mike's phone call with the Governor, or ANY of Mike and Heather's previous shows, they can be found on Cann's Youtube page, Two Hotheads: Where Activism Happens, featuring more than 500 videos, with more than 600,000+ views, and 2,200+ subscribers. Drew Astor, "(Two Hotheads), Finally something I can get behind"
By Drew Astor
Personally, I have never thought of myself of being one to volunteer my effort to do any sort of actual work. Especially something that involves writing. This is stepping out of my personal comfort zone in a lot of different ways. I have been going through quite a lot in my own personal life that I simply won't get into because that is not the point of this. When Mike Cann posted on his Facebook group, Two Hotheads, Where Activism Happens, that he needed somebody to do some writing about what he was doing it was like I was possessed. Finally something I can get behind. Cannabis reform was my golden egg to enlightenment really. Yeah, enlightenment. So bear with me as I provide some background.
When I first went to College as a bright eyed 18 year old, I was like every other naive kid who had never truly experienced what the world was like for those who didn’t get things handed to them. Being a “well-to-do” white kid from the suburbs in Ohio in a stable middle-class family, my life up until certain events, has been pretty much a cake walk. Until I came upon the topic of cannabis reform. Here was something that in my experience just did not make any sense. I did my research. I saw all the amazing things that Cannabis was. I simply could not comprehend why it was illegal. I know the reasons and the history now. But it still makes no sense why the world at large just can not seem to get their shit together when it comes to cannabis.
Here we have a plant that grows naturally in just about any climate on Earth. It has made it to the upper echelon of evolution by being one of the most useful plants man has ever known. Up until the times of prohibition and Harry Anslinger it was used to create our world. Then somebody with too much money in their pockets and this itch for more power. If you happen to be an cannabis activist you know your history and I won’t beat this proverbial drum any longer.
Two Hothead, Where Activism Happens. Is an internet radio show that I have been following for years now. I have always felt them to be my East-Coast kindred spirits. Doing a lot of the work that I, being a lazy pot-smoking kid, just couldn’t seem to find the time for. Now because I have had to stop smoking I have a way to give back to the community that has helped me through so much in my life. Here is a group of people who have dedicated what seems like all of their free time to trying to get this cannabis reform movement to actually accomplish its goals and here is my chance to write about them and contribute to the greater good.
I feel that cannabis being illegal was pretty much the start of America's downward spiral into the delusion of greatness many think we are. Don’t get me wrong. The people of this country are amazing or rather I see it as the people of the world are amazing and we let politicians grasp hold of the power to put laws on the books without any real oversight by the population. The majority of Americans can not seem to be bothered with getting off of their asses to help, anybody besides themselves directly. We all seem to have this mentality of “If it doesn’t affect me directly than why should I care.” Even people who smoke have this problem. “I still get mine, so screw it”. Let’s be honest, being an even moderately intelligent human being, anyone can pretty much do anything they want if they think about it hard enough. The way to solve these problems to is to get people to understand that when you fight for everyone's rights you're fighting for your own.
So we have a guy like Mike Cann who happens to be doing everything he can to try and push back against the people pushing to oppress us. When it comes down to the main points, any type of prohibition is an attack against personal rights. It is the case of somebody who has too much power or money to gain saying they know what is better for you than you yourself do. We have allowed the wrong people to gain power and then build that power structure to corrupt all those who enter it. It is slowly making its way back to the light, but far too slowly in my opinion. I think what this movement needs really is spiritual guidance, not religious or anything like that. Spirituality is merely the taking back of your own mind or rather your own heart. I personally have been able to manifest my own reality in a way that to any outside perspective seems like a psychotic episode. But I can tell you with my heart with one hundred percent honesty that my thoughts have changed the world at large more than I could ever get anyone to believe. I feel that I have experienced two separate realities. And now I am in the process of creating a third one that will bring about what I feel is the golden age that we all deserve.
Our thoughts and words have more power than any sort of vote. We can literally change the world directly through meditation of peace. What if we all meditated instead on peace but could actually agree to meditate on getting people to vote corrupt politicians out of office. Or meditate on creating a better global way to live. I realize this is not what you had in mind when you asked me to write about this, but this is my head and what it has turned into :) If there is any way for me to spread what I have discovered to a greater audience I have to try. The same type of thinking that has gotten us into this mess will not get us out. We need to change the way people think. If you have been following me on facebook you know how I work. Peace, love, kindness and compassion. This is what the world needs to fix all its problems. A heart based approach. I need to be able to share this human power with more of humanity. This is how I think I can help the movement. Not with a short synopsis about the show, sorry if it all collapsed into this. But its the first time I’ve strung so many thoughts together in writing at one time and I thank you for the opportunity to allow me to. :) If this doesn't help you I apologize for getting your hopes up. Feel free to use any of this for whatever means you wish. Hopefully you can come up with a way for me to spread this power to as many people as I can. It is so real.
